History :
Knowle dates back to the time of King Edward I of England, over 700
years ago, when it had the status of a Royal manor. The Manor had its
origins as part of the manor of Hampton-in-Arden and over time it
passed through the hands of King Edward I, Westminster Abbey, Elizabeth
I and James I. It then passed to the Grevilles, later the Earls of
Warwick. It was then passed to the Wilsons who sold the estate in the
1840s.
The Parish Church, which is still in use today, was consecrated in
1403. It was founded as access to Hampton-in-Arden was difficult in
winter due to the ford at the River Blythe.
There are many ancient buildings around, notably 16th century Grimshaw
Hall and the current library which dates back to Elizabethan times. The
Guild House dates from the 15th century and forms the core of a
conservation area of which the restored Chester House is an outstanding
feature.
Knowle was on the stagecoach route from Birmingham to London. The
Mermaid & Greswolde Arms now just known as The Greswolde became a
main coaching inn.
Author John Wyndham was born in Knowle.
Present day
Knowle is a busy village which still retains some charm, despite being
on the very edge of the West Midlands conurbation. Knowle joins onto
the village of Dorridge and the considerably smaller village Bentley
Heath, both of which are large residential areas.
